Did you know that, here at Modest Needs, it's not unusual to receive applications for too little money? Yes, you heard me correctly. Too little. Perhaps an applicant only asks for one month's rent when he's going to be out of work recovering from a surgery for at least two months. Or someone requests $500 for a medical bill when the full payment is actually $800.
For these people, who are accustomed to making ends meet on their own, having to ask for any assistance at all is a difficult step to take -- a worst-case scenario. They wouldn't dream of asking us or anyone else for one penny more than the absolute minimum they need to get by.
But in some cases, they deserve more than the bare minimum.
That's when I get to do one of my favorite things: tell these applicants that our big-hearted donors have come through for them, and for MORE than they originally requested. That was the case for Billie, who was short on her rent payment because she'd taken time off work to retrieve her 2-year-old son from an ex-husband keeping him from her illegally. Our friends at Loews didn't just fund her request -- they surpassed it.
Here's Billie's note of thanks:
"I really do not know how to thank everyone at Modest Needs for your help and generosity, especially those who have donated their hard earned money to help others. I actually received more assistance than I requested, and I am so relieved I am in tears. I am definitely going to return the favor by donating every month, because I would love to be a part of this program and help others the way all of you have helped me. Thanks Again, Billie"
