At Modest Needs, part of our mission is to help people who have no place else to turn. Perhaps they make too much money for traditional welfare, but not enough to pay their rent this month. Maybe they are people who don't qualify for health insurance, and a medical emergency might wipe them out. They could be a parent who lost a spouse and now can't afford a bed for her children after losing his income.
The fact is, there are thousands upon thousands of worthy, crucial charities that help with serious specifics--like Make-a-Wish or the Red Cross or the United Way. Modest Needs serves to fill in those cracks that individuals might otherwise slip through if no one stepped in to assist.
What if you had severe OCD that made you pull your hair out in clumps? What if going to run errands with your children embarrassed them due to the bald patches on your scalp? What if your husband's lack of work is leading to the stress which leads to the pulling and you couldn't afford a wig to cover the effects of your disorder?
Donors at Modest Needs helped someone in this very situation:
I am a Mom of 3, diagnosed with OCD and hair pulling disorder. My husband is self-employed as a tile installer and because of the economy he is not obtaining many jobs. We are 2 months behind on our bills. I am afraid to leave the house because of my bald patches on my head.
My children are also embarrassed by this as well. I feel like if I had a wig it would give me more confidence to go out in public and would be helpful to my children. It would also help so that I can keep my medical and counseling appointments.

The amount needed was less than $100, but it was simply too much, at the time, for this struggling mother to afford. So, you stepped in. And this is what she said as a result:
I am pleased that I have people who are willing to help me through this tough time. I think the wig will give me more confidence and my children will now feel more comfortable going out with Mommy. I can't thank you enough for all of the help and support. Thank you for helping me feel more confident about myself. The wig will also enable me to go to my doctor's appointments to address my medical issues without feeling embarressed. Thanks again to all the people who donated, this will definetely make a difference in my life.
This is just one of many stories that unfold with the help of people like you who selflessly give to Modest Needs--to people who might have no where else to turn.
