Most of us take a hot shower for granted. Today's Applicant of the Day doesn't. In fact, it's the one thing she wants most.
MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is a devastating illness that leaves many patients wheelchair-bound. This loss of mobility makes everything from bathing to getting from one room to another a dangerous challenge. An MS patient herself, our Applicant has worked hard to find the funding for a chair lift to help safely transfer her from wheelchair to shower so she can bathe normally again. Her efforts have paid off--she's almost completely funded. She just needs a modest bit of help to reach her goal. Read her story below in her own words:
"I am a single woman who lives alone with the help of a caregiver each day. I have MS and am unable to work. Because of my limited mobility, I use a power wheelchair and require the assistance of an Electric Hoyer Lift to transfer me from the chair to other locations.
While I have a bathtub, my mobility issues mean I have not been able to bathe in a very long time. The shower chair I need will allow my caregiver to to get me into the tub and out safely. I have been sponge bathing for so long I cannot wait to be able to have a shower!
Imagine not being able to take a shower, to only sponge bath. It's not ideal. It may sound like an odd request, but until the ability to bathe is taken away from you I guess it's hard to understand.
I have been trying to get this chair for over a year. I have a low fixed income with regular monthly expenses therefore I can't afford to purchase this chair myself. I have reached out for assistance from agencies willing to help. They have helped--I just need $500 more.
