I think it is great you are helping grandparents, especially since they are acting as the parent but infrequently get the financial support of one. I worked for the census as an enumerator and 1/4 families I interviewed was a grandparent/s caring for grandchildren. While some were ok many were trying to cover all the families bills on social security frequently having cereal for multiple meals a day or forgoing their own meals to give them to the children.
