I came across the oddest phenomenon recently: a holiday shop overflowing with faux-evergreen wreathes, velvet stockings, and gaudy tree ornaments, and bustling with shoppers. Here's the kicker: this is on a beach boardwalk in July, folks. This store is busy every summer. I'm sure you've seen the same kinds of retail establishments in your neck of the woods.
The prices of these holiday items aren't discounted. And there's certainly no real rush to use this merchandise. So why do holiday stores flourish in the off-season? My guess is that people are simply starved for a little taste of that end-of-the-year cheer. Six more months, after all, is a long time to wait.
Personally, I think it's a great idea. Or, I should say, it has the POTENTIAL to be a great idea. The holidays bring out the best in so many people. We remind loved ones how much we care. We volunteer. We donate to causes we're passionate about. But instead of (or in addition to!) purchasing this year's tree trimmings in the midst of a heat wave, perhaps we could each just conjure up a little bit of that holiday spirit. You know, generosity, good will toward your fellow human being. That kind of thing!
So in case any of you are looking to get into the spirit sooner rather than later, here are a few worthy Modest Needs applicants who could certainly benefit from your generosity.
Mom and Army Wife - Tires
Health Insurance Payment
Disabled Couple - Storage Fees
And in the meantime, have a very merry rest of July and a happy mid-year!
