Feathers, beads, and floats filled the streets of New Orleans earlier this week with Mardi Gras 2009. And what city deserves a celebration more than this one?
People in Louisiana are still struggling, to be certain. Every month, we receive large numbers of applications from New Orleans and across the state.
Just this morning I came across a startling application from a single mom of 7 children living in the Big Easy. After working for decades to support her children, she recently lost her job. But she's one of the lucky ones. She has landed new job already. Now, it's just a matter of catching up on her back rent. Although the late rent might be the last hurdle, it's still an awfully formidable one -- and one that threatens to make this hardworking mother and her children homeless.
Just imagine this family's reaction if they happened to receive an email over the weekend saying "Help is on the way."
With 7 kids, I can picture a celebration in my head that might just give Mardi Gras a run for its money.
