Below is a very interesting, very informative podcast interview with Gary Rivlin on How the Working Poor Became Big Business in this country. It's a half hour long, but a really riveting discussion about how check cashing places and pawn shops went corporate. Rivlin reveals that "the poverty industry" preys on the desperate, and that currently there are as many payday loan places as there are McDonalds and Burger King restaurants combined! This is shocking.
In fact, one individual preying on the working poor admitted that his target is “an uneducated woman on limited income with lots of credit card debt." His business specifically goes after those on the verge and without many alternatives.
