This Louisiana mother lost her child and health in a deadly shooting. Two years later and still reeling from the horrifying chain of events which ended with a gunshot wound to the head, she has been derailed again by auto repairs she cannot currently afford. Below is her modest request, in her own words:
Hello. I am in desperate need of help with car repairs in order to get to my doctor and to search for work. I was shot in the face in January 2009--my only child was killed on that day as well. I have had several surgeries to repair obstructions from the shooting and to reconstruct my lower jaw. I need to check in with my doctor frequently.
I do receive a retirement pension which, until now, has sustained me since I was injured. However, my income is not enough to allow me to cover expenses that are necessary to my Jeep while still covering my home maintenance, costs of living and utilities. I am also still making payments to the funeral home that buried my child. I did not have any funeral insurance for her.
My automobile allows me to get to my doctors appointments and to be mobile. Without it I am stranded. The hospital I have to go to is more than 20 miles from my home. The hospital closest to me was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and has not reopened since then.
I have been very depressed every since this situation began. I do not know how to get out of it. I have applied for Social Security Disability benefits, and have applied for employment with a Domestic Violence Counseling Center. Hopefully I will be going back to work soon. But I cannot get to work, see the doctor, or continue to search for a job without a car.
If I can get through this situation I will try to apply the salary I will earn to a savings account. This will enable me to be better able to handle emergencies such as this one on my own. With help I know I can get to the next step. Bless you for considering this need.
